The Taste of Generic | February 17, 2015

I’m going to start off by saying, if you’re a health nut or someone that promotes clean eating- HELP.  I’m a total sweets junkie.  Cookies, cakes, waaaaay too much of that granulated goodness in my coffee.  Help.  Just help.  😉  (Ahem, BFF who is a Beachbody coach… get on my case about this, ok?)

So, I know what you’re thinking.  Samoas & Thin Mints, right?  Yeah, no.  😉  These are dollar store knock offs.  Without looking at the box, my guess is they’re named something like “Coconut Caramel Fudge Some-More-as” and “Skinny & Minty’s”  ???

I was devouring a couple of these after lunch yesterday and had to laugh.  I’ve deprived myself of genuine Girl Scout cookies for so long that I can’t even tell the difference between the authentic and the generic!!  They’re equally as delicious in my mind because I don’t have the better ones available to do a taste test.

In that moment of laughter, God spoke over me and said, “Isn’t that how it is with scripture study?  Your lack of distinction between cookies is not any different from what happens when people deprive themselves of time with Me.”  (I definitely yelled, “WHOA!” out loud in my kitchen, too.  I love when He speaks truth over me through the in-between moments of my day!)

That’s such powerful truth, though, isn’t it?

If we deprive ourselves of reading/studying His Word & developing our relationship with Him, a “generic” teaching can come our way, and we’ll devour it without seeing any difference between what’s true and what’s false.

It actually took me far too long to realize that just because someone might be saying “God” when they’re preaching or even sharing a quote, it doesn’t mean they’re speaking truth about our Lord… or even talking about God-God… Like “capital g” God.  Sadly, we’re living in a day and age where we need to be aware of the false teachings creeping into our own churches.  Someone might be preaching the name of Jesus Christ- and their teachings might sound great, but there are a lot of things being taught that you do not want to be a part of.  Not because little old Marybeth Hancher says so, but because GOD says so:

– “I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them.”  Romans 16:17

– “But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves.  Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute.  In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.”  2 Peter 2:1-3

– “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”  1 John 4:1

… Those are just a few!

It’s OUR responsibility to stand all teachings up against scripture and see if they hold true or deviate from The Truth.  Easiest way to do this is to get to know the Bible by spending some quiet time with the Lord on a daily basis.

So, don’t deprive yourself of the “Thin Mint” Gospel, because the “Skinny & Minty” gospel will creep in and trick you into thinking there’s no difference.

Challenge: What can you give up today in order to make time for the Lord?  I personally know one way I waste my precious time- Social media!!  Trust me when I say that giving up a time-waster once a day won’t be as big of a deal as you might think.  In fact, you’ll be trading UP.  Can we agree to do this together?  🙂

XOXO, Marybeth

Pssst… And if anyone’s got any REAL Girl Scout Cookies to share with me, I’ll gladly take a few off your hands.  😉
