Flip Book Fun!

April 15, 2016

Let’s talk about snail mail…. Here I thought it would have died out by now!  Can I just say that I’m SO glad it didn’t?!  Heck, I didn’t know people still kept penpals until a few years ago, and when I discovered what penpaling had turned into, my jaw dropped.  People send the most adorable mail to each other.  Seriously.  Check it out if you’re new to this!  (After you’re done scrolling around there, hit up Pinterest and search for things like “happy mail” or “snail mail”… Beautiful stuff!)

Well, naturally, I joined in the fun, although I don’t have a formal “penpal” per se.  I just send things to friends who have the same love affair with pretty paper that I do.  😉  A few weeks back, I was asked by someone who I have been following on social media for a while now if I would do a mail swap with her.  I was stinking delighted!  Her name is Sabrina, and she’s a total gem & a brilliant crafter!  She is also an autism mama, too, so she understands my struggles in the same way that I understand hers.  So we decided to make each other flipbooks (which is totally new to me!) in order to get to know each other better.  To say I had fun making this would be an understatement.

I used my We R Memory Keepers Envelope Punch Board & the Maggie Holmes Shine collection scrapbook papers to make the envelopes that are the base of this flipbook.  And I tried out Sabrina’s method of making them but following her tutorial here.

It’s nice how creating something like this can use up all the little scraps that seem to always be left over after a big project.  🙂  As a bonus, it’s fun!

So what might you add in this type of mail?  Well, a letter for starters.  🙂

… then you might add a photo of yourself if you feel ok with that.  I always like to see people’s faces, but that’s just me.  😀

With a flipbook, the fun part is how it will continue to open further revealing more fun things… so next in line was an envelope with some photos I’ve taken per her request.  She likes my photography, and, well, I like sharing it.  😉  So I printed out a few of my favorites and tucked them in an envelope.

I made another little envelope and put some wooden star veneers inside, and then I tucked some cute journaling cards behind it.

The last envelope that flips out reveals some more pretty stuff…

This little addition flips out to reveal a little pack of charms she can use in her projects.

The next one flips out to show a bundle of mirrors… just for fun.  😉

In the envelope, I put some washi tape samples… cause who doesn’t like those?  🙂

Finally, I decorated the last envelope in the bundle by putting another cute pocket on the front that contains the “mail tag.”  A mail tag is kind of a little game you play with your penpals to get to know them better.  You can ask questions that they’ll answer the next time they mail you a letter or even request things from them.  Check this out right here.

And then I wrapped some seam binding samples around a homemade tag and put it in the envelope.

Then you fold it back up and that’s that!  It was so fun to make, and I was delighted to hear that she loved it!!!  Want to see the one she made me?  It’s adorable!!

And p.s.- the stickers for Nadia were much appreciated.  😉

Hey Marybeth! Your flip book is too cute! I was wondering two things. 1) how you made the little sequin shaker and 2) how you adhered the little flip out section with the mirrors behind it. Did you just use washi? Does it seem to stick well?

Hi!! Thanks so much! The shaker I made using a Project Life page protector that I just cut down, and I used my We R Memory Keepers Fuse tool to fuse it together. 🙂 And for the other little section, yes washi! But I will say that I don’t trust the adhesive on washi to hold things together for too long since it’s a light tack kind of tape, so I actually run my own adhesive along the back of it before sticking it down so it’s nice and sturdy. I hope that helps!! XOXO

    Hello!
I love this, it’s exactly what I was looking for!
Can you tell what you used to make the cover of this flip book?
And how did you make/measure it to hold everything in (because it looks like the We R Memory board you mention is for making regular envelopes)?
Basically, any tip on how to make the book/cover to start off the flipbook would be greatly appreciated!

    Sai

Hi! I’m so glad you liked this! 🙂 I actually followed my friend Sabrina’s tutorial that she posted on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/_KIZIRniTTY I honestly can’t remember the exact size I created since I made this quite a while ago, but I just picked a larger size like 6×8 maybe??, followed the guidelines on the punch board for scoring the paper, and then created multiple envelopes that I stuck together exactly as she shows in the tutorial. The cover is an envelope as well. I hope that’s at least semi-helpful! haha She explains it better in her video! 😉 Have fun making yours! XOXO, Marybeth

Did I just throw the "softest birthday party ever?" 🦄 Can confirm. 🤣I surprised Dana with a Letterkenny themed party this year along with his very own Bonnie McMurray (@kamillakowal) to serve him a Puppers. Did he love it? That's a Texas sized 10-4. 🥰 Anyone that watches that show would get all the references I plastered around the house. Allegedly.Happy 38th birthday, babe! Good morning from Cinder! 🥰😽 Good morning from Cinder! 🥰😽
I've recently begun taking a low dose SSRI for PMD I've recently begun taking a low dose SSRI for PMDD/depression, & while it's not necessarily everyones business to know this information... I mean, it's me. Open book. And spoiler alert: these medicines work. 🤣It's amazing how you can walk around under a dense cloud for years & not even become truly aware of it until one day the fog is debilitating. In the past month, I've finally admitted to myself & everyone around me that something was terribly wrong. I journal daily, & those old journal entries are painful for me to read. Thank God for doctors/nurses/NPs that listen closely & offer help to we that are hurting. As it says in my Cognitive Behavioral Therapy workbook, "PMDD is to PMS what major depression is to feeling 'depressed' when one's favorite team loses." 👏👏👏 All this to say, if you have PMDD, DO NOT IGNORE IT and don't let anyone dismiss it as PMS. Well meaning people who just wish to empathize and give me assurance that I'm not alone have pushed my legitimate pain and concerns aside for years, telling me it's "normal." Finally, I found a doctor that listened and diagnosed me with PMDD, moderate depression, panic disorder, & anxiety. And I've gotten help.In my haze, I've caused destruction. Said things I can't take back but things I can at least attempt to apologize for. I've ignored friends without becoming aware that I've done it. I felt alone for so long, even in conversations & even when my body was physically present with friends. But once the fog lifted I discovered something beautiful-- the people I love never left my side, even if I couldn't see them. The density of my depression blocked them from view, but now that I see the sun again, I see their faces smiling back.I made this art journaling page the day I took my first pill. I held it in my hand crying that I didn't want to need it. But once I took it, relief. I was proud of myself for calling it quits on the mind games I was playing with myself. The "just meditate." The "exercise more and you'll feel better." The thousands of dollars on alternative treatments just to avoid the stigma of a pill I swore I'd never take. But Prozac won. I won. And everyone else did, too. I'm back. ❤
I got this journal a while back, but it hasn't bee I got this journal a while back, but it hasn't been used because 1. The leather absolutely stunk to the point of triggering a migraine when I first unwrapped it (like what on earth chemicals did they soak this in?!)... and 2. I didn't care for the paper inside because I'm picky. 😉 But after a month or two of airing out the stank, I think I figured out how to use it. I was already planning on making a mini album using @maggiehdesign Garden Party collection to document this years gardening with the girls, and now I've got the perfect cover. Time to take this leather book apart and rebind it using the papers from the collection! I'll show ya when I'm done... whenever that may be. 😋 Anyways, happy Monday! Hope you all have a great start to the week! ❤#maggieholmesgardenparty #cratepaper #memorykeeping #minialbum
