45 Fun Family Activities to do this Summer (Free Printable!)

May 31, 2024

School is out and all the kids are ready for…
No, let’s be honest here. They’re already bored, aren’t they? After all, what’s there to do at home?!

SO MUCH. There’s so much you can do.

Now, I’m a big fan of boredom. Truly. It’s through boredom that you discover so much about yourself or find new talents that were hidden underneath the busy schedules and preplanned activities. Boredom means busting out a new book and discovering halfway through that if it keeps going like this, it’s going to make your Top 3 Favorite Novels of All Time list. Boredom means learning what all the hype is with sourdough bread and then realizing that you’ll never buy a loaf of bland, store bought bread ever again. Boredom is trying a new workout because you might as well do something productive & good for your body and finding out that you not only love it but want to teach it at your local gym.

You get it.

BUT, just in case you need some extra ideas to cross off your list of summertime fun, here’s what I came up with:

45 Things To Do This Summer

  1. Make a Summer Scrapbook Journal (buy composition notebooks & have fun decorating the cover with papers, stickers, etc.)
  2. Make friendship bracelets
  3. Learn a dance and put on a social media recital šŸ˜‰ (Thriller, anyone?)
  4. Host the Backyard Olympics (and yes, you get medals.)
  5. Do a summer themed puzzle.
  6. Write a letter to someone you love and mail it.
  7. Homemade ice cream for dessert (or dinner. We won’t judge.)
  8. Fly a kite. (Or if it’s not windy enough, ā€œflyā€ helium balloons. Make the string extra long and tie them tight.)
  9. Family picnic/ Read Aloud Time
  10. Throw a Harry Potter party. (Craft idea: Make your own wands, dress up as characters, serve Butter Beer, play games on House teams.)
  11. S’mores Night
  12. Backyard frisbee
  13. Go to a free outdoor concert (search FB Events!)
  14. Drive-In Movie Night
  15. Paint each other’s portraits (Keep it a secret til the end! Bonus points if you hang them in your home and act like you think they’re good when guests are there.)
  16. Go on a scavenger hunt around town.
  17. Spend a morning at the Farmer’s Market.
  18. Join a new workout class or find one on YouTube. Invite friends to do it together!
  19. Take 10 minutes a day to learn something new. (ex. a new song on piano, kids *finally* learn to write in cursive, etc.)
  20. Yard Sale day! (Have one yourself or drive around and find one.)
  21. Go to a street fair and have your caricature drawn.
  22. Take a long walk. Longer than you’d normally take. Enjoy the heck out of it.
  23. Paint cards to share with family and friends. (Or make a set of cards and wrap them in twine as a gift.)
  24. Make a book of poetry with your family. (Everyone writes a word or theme on a scrap of paper & puts it into a hat. Write about what you choose. If you do this multiple times throughout the summer, you’ll have enough to bind into a ridiculous family book of *likely hilarious and horrible* poetry. Bonus points if you draw pictures, Shel Silverstein style.)
  25. Go strawberry picking & make a treat to share with a neighbor or friend.
  26. Movie marathon day
  27. Watch fireworks together
  28. Go mini golfing or go-kart racing
  29. Karaoke night (at home!)— You can get a microphone and speaker set for kids on Amazon fairly cheap. Plenty of free karaoke songs on Youtube. Trust me, this is fun.
  30. Beach day (for us, that means the lake!)
  31. Make homemade popsicles
  32. Document an entire day in Polaroids (or get a disposable camera)
  33. Go thrifting or find a vintage market
  34. Find a movie theater that offers free movies during the summer. Go see them all.
  35. Family game night (with prizes)
  36. Paint rocks for the garden.
  37. Visit a state park for the day.
  38. Keep a small journal in your bag. Write down quotes you see or funny things you hear.
  39. Go flower picking.
  40. Make a collage of all the things you love that make you happy.
  41. Re-read a favorite novel or two.
  42. Have fun at a County Fair!
  43. Photoshoot day— hire a professional photographer to capture you and your family or if you’ve got a camera, take photos of someone you love. Just because.
  44. Wake up early before sunrise and stretch as it rises.
  45. Make Family T-Shirts together. (Tie dye is fun, but so is puffy paint, fabric markers, or if you’re crafty, making them with vinyl & a Cricut.)

Save this list and print it for those days (and weeks!) where you’re running low on your own ideas and need something to do together as a family. Some of these will require more planning but others can be spontaneous and things you likely can do for cheap (or free!).

If you want to make your own list, I gotchu. (Save and print the papers below.)

Nadia wrote her own list of summer plans and (thankfully) they were things I want to do, too!

I anticipate December being our best homeschool mo I anticipate December being our best homeschool month yet. Kinda easy when the curriculum is adorable & fun and the activities are endless! ā¤ļøLast night as I was planning the week, I came across a shop on Etsy called @noahsschoolhouse that has the cutest little Nativity Story set with character study cards, word scramble activities, a booklet with the story that includes questions and a glossary, and more. It’s going to be so sweet to get this out each day as we learn.I laminated them so we can use dry erase markers to dig in a little more. Today she underlined every time we came across a name so we can study the people first. (We learned all the times in the Bible the angel Gabriel appeared to someone with a message from God, along with his name meaning so that was fun to talk about.) Next I’ll have her underline some of the places and events to study those, too.Our copywork includes Christmas songs and verses. We’ve got poems and lessons to learn about how others celebrate Christmas across the globe. She gets to practice for her little church performance which will be so cute to see! We’ll be making decorations and baking and calling it math & science and being ok with that. šŸ˜‰ Like I said, it’s gonna be a great month. šŸŽ„Fellow home-teacher-moms… what are your plans? 🄰
ā¤ļø Thanksgiving 2024 🦃 I’m so happy my pa ā¤ļø Thanksgiving 2024 🦃 I’m so happy my parents could join us this year! I loooove hosting Thanksgiving & I actually really enjoy the many hours (or days šŸ˜†) of prepping and baking and creating the very best dinner I can serve the people I love… in the prettiest way possible. This year, Dana spatchcocked the turkey (which freaked Natasha out when she saw what looked like him performing a very sloppy CPR on the bird šŸ˜‚) and it turned out great! I realized we no longer had the charcuterie board we once had, so Dana said, ā€œGive me 20 minutesā€ and emerged from his woodshop with a fine slab of cherry wood and the most beautiful peacock shaped handles to adorn it. (Matches all the other peacock decor in our house. šŸ˜) It’s funny how we’re typically not fancy people until I host a dinner night, then suddenly it’s all table runners & cloth napkins. But even if all we had that evening was canned corn and the cranberry sauce that never loses the shape of the can eaten on cheap paper plates in the middle of my living room… well, that also would have been enough. I have been blessed in abundance my entire life, not necessarily in riches but always in love. On Thanksgiving and every day, I am so grateful! ā¤ļøI hope you all had a lovely one, too! 🄰
ā€œThen if my people who are called by my name wil ā€œThen if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.ā€ 2 Chronicles 7:14Humble. Pray. Turn. Seek. Heal. ā¤ļø
We prayed. We voted. We wait. ā€œAs for me and my We prayed. We voted. We wait.ā€œAs for me and my houseā€¦ā€No matter the outcome, we serve the Lord & we trust Him.Your will be done, God. ā¤ļø
Every second I get to spend with my sweet Natasha Every second I get to spend with my sweet Natasha is a gift like no other. She is growing quickly, and while I may feel sentimental and a little sad at times about how fast childhood goes, I’ll never be sad about seeing the beautiful, intelligent, Jesus loving, cat cuddling big kid she’s becoming. She gives the most heartfelt handmade gifts, draws the cutest and funniest pictures, asks the best questions, plays the silliest games, has the wildest imagination, feels everything deeply, is the very best little sister to Nadia, and makes friends everywhere she goes. I couldn’t be more proud to be her mother! So on her 6th birthday, we’ll eat cake, decorate with all things unicorns, and Dana and I will (as we do every birthday) end the night smiling, maybe a little teary eyed, and feeling unbelievably thankful that we were given the best gift of all. Raising this girl is such a joy!Happy birthday, my darling Tashie! ā¤ļø
The other day I posted a story asking if anyone wa The other day I posted a story asking if anyone wanted to form a bookclub of sorts and read this with me… I didn’t anticipate that @lisabevere would share it to her own stories and that I’d receive a big YES from more than my local friends! šŸ™ŒšŸ» Truthfully, I was really only thinking of my church sisters since I don’t necessarily hang out on social media much these days 🫣, but the Lord is pressing it on my heart to go for it and take the lead because this is a battle both near and far, and we have to fight it together. So for those that didn’t see my story, if you’d like to join a small group of females ready to fight the good fight to take back the identity God has given us since the beginning— grab this book! Let’s kick off next week. Read at your own pace but plan to discuss about 3 chapters each week (the chapters aren’t long but man are they powerful!). I’ll share some posts here on IG to get us talking, but if there is any interest in a Facebook group for easier (and more!) discussion, I’d be happy to make one of those, too. Share your thoughts on that, will ya? ā¬‡ļø
